Let The Games Begin!

My first snail mail query (with my prologue/chapter 1) goes out today. Finally! With hubby out of town for 3 days, it's been such a busy week with just the normal stuff; school, home schooling, lessons, laundry...and then there was running out of ink, paper, stamps and envelopes...well, let's just say that it took me quite a bit longer than usual to get my act together. Oh well, it's all taken care of and I can move on.

Just so you know, I do plan on querying widely after my initial run at the first few agents -assuming none of them take me on, of course :) My plan is to first query the agents that generally take the longest to reply. I'm giving myself 6 months to hear back from them before I begin adding to the list (unless I start getting responses/requests sooner, in which case I'll pick up the pace - there are only a handful that I've found that I think would be best suited to my career at this point). I know, that's not necessarily a big time frame in the writing world, but it's as large a window as my patience can handle! In the meantime, and after I'm completely done with the notes on my current MS, I will be working on my next project. So exciting!

With the story polished and tweaked to the best of my ability, I've begun to go over the comments made by my fresh pair of eyes in greater depth. Well, truth be told, I did the first few chapters already so they could be ready to submit to agents at a moment's notice. I am so pleased with the results thus far. It's awesome to have a fresh perspective on the story. Rebecca gave me such great feedback, and the changes I've made have really helped improve things. I was extremely happy with the way my MS turned out in the first place, so anything I can do to make it better is just icing on the cake. Obviously I know that once this is in an agent's or editor's hands, there will be more changes to be made, but all I can do is make this as strong as possible.

The End

How is it that those two simple words can bring such a tremendous amount of joy? It seems a little silly to get excited, especially when there are many edits on the horizon, but it's a good thing to be able to type those words. I'm sending my first agent letter this week, and I'm so excited about it. The only drawback is that this particular agent only accepts queries by snail-mail, so the response time will be quite far into the future. If she takes me on, the wait will be worth it, but man...it's going to kill me!

Edits, or, Praise to the girl who catches my mistakes

I've received the first groups of chapters back from my fresh pair of eyes today. Even though I was a little scared to see what she had for me, I was so happy. It's weird, because I'm a pretty laid back person, but I like to do things right the first time, and I'm kind of a perfectionist for typos, grammar, etc. so I feel embarrassed for some of the things I've missed. I definitely struggle with being too hard on myself, but that's one thing that I love about the whole writing thing. It takes me out of my comfort zone, stretches me, and helps me understand that it's okay to have to go back and do things over. I don't need to be perfect, right? After all, that's why I asked for Rebecca's help!*

I can't even begin to express how grateful I am for her - she is wonderful. I'm looking forward to going over the manuscript and making some more changes. Her thoughtful comments have already started the wheels turning. This story doesn't know it yet, but it's going to be better! I just hope I can do a good enough job. I feel a tremendous responsibility to her - I want for her time to be well-spent.

Now, if only I didn't have such a busy week, I could get more chapters out to her...

Besos...

*Just to clarify - Rebecca doesn't have magical powers that bestow perfection upon imperfect manuscripts. She's just incredibly insightful. I should stop telling everyone how good she is. She might want me to pay her. And I totally would if I could.
