Tying up loose ends

Tidying and trying to make everything fit when and where it should. It's always fun, isn't it? It's been such a fascinating process for me to write this novel. I've never taken on such a big project, and as a student, all of my assignments had been criticized for being too much to the point (with the exception of Mr. Mang, who encouraged my creativity and once allowed me to turn in a 13 page paper written in pink ink on 6"x8" paper that I scaled down myself - he laughed because he never specified that it had to be standard size and gave me an A). I've always been so good at self-editing, that I could get things down to bare bones in a very precise way. I was never one for embellishment, and even now I struggle with expanding on scenery, etc., so as to create the proper mood and get across the real meaning of what I'm trying to write. It's a good challenge, though, and I enjoy trying to make things work. This is like one big puzzle for which I have to ransack my brain for the pieces. It's draining, but a lot of fun too.

So for right now, I'm working on polishing this draft, and in all likelihood will get this off to agents by the end of March. That's the goal, anyway. It was supposed to be done already, but life has a way of interfering. With a husband, 5 kids and 2 cats, home renos, visitors over the holidays, and recovery from a pre-christmas car wreck, there's a lot going on around here! I don't mind, really. It's important to be flexible, but I'm working on getting my bearings as a writer - striking the right balance and all that - and am looking forward to getting back into the groove of things once the kids are back in school (with the exception of #1 whom I home school).

I've been reticent to get involved in the blogosphere, but I can already tell that I'm going to like being accountable to the masses (hi mom, hi little sis). Even if nobody ever reads this, I feel some sort of responsibility to follow through on what I write. Hopefully this will only lead to increased motivation, and not guilt :) I suppose only time will tell!

A New Year, A New Blog

I'm not in the habit of mincing words, so I'll get right to the point. In the spirit of record-keeping, I hope to keep track of what will be a very exciting time in my life. I don't expect to be of interest to too many people, but perhaps others may gain some encouragement from my pursuit (and hopefully, success) in becoming a published author. Ever the optimist, I expect some fun things to happen this year, and look forward to sharing the process with anyone who desires to listen.
